Reflection

I really had fun recoloring the monochromatic pictures since I really like editing and colors a lot. I learned so much on how to properly edit pictures in Photoshop and even understand how to change the looks of a picture so drastically which would definitely be useful in the future.

Exercises

Exercise 1

For this week, we were tasked to recolor monochromatic pictures of people and make them look as realistic as possible with colors in Photoshop.

Figure 2 Skin Color of the Old Man

I started out with the skin color following the lecture slides instructions. I used the brush in the tools and color the skin to a semi off toned orange and set it  to overlay so the color would settle on the skin properly instead of a basic cell shading. After that, I added plenty of reddish hues onto his skin to make him look more alive along with a slight light grey purple and blue for the bounce of light that casts after the shadows.

Figure 3 Testing Hair Color

Moving on, I went to color the hair and tested out some other modes in the layer settings and decided to go for saturation to give him a natural ash blond hair color.

Exercise 2

For the 2nd Exercise, we had to learn another way to recolor the monochromatic picture instead.

Figure 4 Referencing Skin Color

As I followed the instruction for the 2nd lecture slide that was provided, I selected the skin color of another woman that was provided in the google drive and another woman for the hair color.

Figure 5 Hair Color and Skin Color

I used the quick select tool to select her skin and clicked on select and mask to properly select what I had missed before. Then I turned it to layer mask and made a new layer and drop a color into the layer and moved the layer mask to the colored layer. After that, I changed the mode to color burn since it looked more natural than overlay and then I did the same for the hair but instead of color burn, I used multiply to give it a softer brown and match how dark her hair was in the monochromatic picture.

Figure 6 Touch Up Colors

After recoloring everything, I made some touch ups for her skin such as adding some natural makeup. I gave her a slight tint of reddish blush on her cheeks and gave her a smokey eye shadow that matches her looks. As for the lips, it was a tough decision on whether I would give her a deep red or green lipstick color. In the end, I went for the deep green since it fits her well and it makes it different from how others would do it. The main reason why I choose the deep green was an accidental testing as I was going through the layer modes. When I hovered on the subtract mode it was previously a deep red but it became a deep green since the subtract mode is the opposite of the original color in the color wheel and it so happens that the color of green fit her well so I do not regret choosing this bold color.

Exercise  3

The final exercise was to use what we had learnt from the previous exercises and recolor 1 out of 20 pictures of some famous people and models. I had a dilemma on which picture to choose but in the end I decided on Jin from BTS since I was familiar with his looks the most.

Figure 7 Jin References

I looked for a reference color that I thought would fit how his picture would look.

Figure 8 Jin's Skin Color

The process was the same as how I did for the woman in exercise 2, where I selected his hair first then used the layer mask and colored his hair a dark brown. However after I selected and recolored the skin, it was slightly obvious that the skin color on his forehead was visibly noticeable in different colors. So I duplicated his hair color layer twice and it also helped darken his hair more and made it more natural too.

Figure 9 Final Touches and Shirt Color

I added plenty of different colors to make his skin look more alive and human by adding some greenish tones, yellows, light purple, light blue and a slightly monochromatic red for the darker parts of his skin. After all the editing to his skin I moved on to his shirt and decided a denim blue would fit his looks better and made it slightly monochromatic so it wasn't too bright of a blue.
