Figure 1. ⋘ 𝑃𝑙𝑒𝑎𝑠𝑒 𝑤𝑎𝑖𝑡... ⋙ by BLACKBOX/1L9l2Aa8UCL0IGJ (2024) - Digital Illustration

Title: ⋘ 𝑃𝑙𝑒𝑎𝑠𝑒 𝑤𝑎𝑖𝑡... ⋙

Artist Name: BLACKBOX / 1L9l2Aa8UCL0IGJ

Year: 2024

Size: 2800px x 4000px

Medium: Digital Illustration

Observation

This artwork was created by Blackbox, the illustrator responsible for the novel cover of Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint. The novel served as a significant source of entertainment and solace during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Amid prolonged periods of isolation, it provided a meaningful escape, allowing me to momentarily detach from the uncertainties of the world.

The illustration, completed in August 2024, was specifically drawn to commemorate the character’s birthday. Despite its monochromatic composition, the artwork is visually compelling. Blackbox’s rendering technique, while seemingly simple, demonstrates a meticulous attention to detail, strategically emphasizing key elements to enhance the depth and expressiveness of the piece. The character’s gesture of holding the screen while reading the artist’s fans’ comments is a remarkable way to integrate audience engagement directly into the artwork. This creative approach not only acknowledges the fans but also enhances the piece’s emotional depth and interactivity. The subtle glitches in the background, combined with the stream of comments, create the illusion that the character is breaking the fourth wall, blurring the boundary between fiction and reality.

 Ideation

Idea 1:

Figure 2. Idea 1 Vibrant Skin Tone

I added more color towards the screen he is reading and color on the character's skin to look more vibrant so it will put the focus of on the character. I also used my tutor's advice and added a darker background so the character stands out more.

Idea 2:

Figure 3. Idea 2 Galaxy Colours

I added a slight blue tint of gradient in the background and add a glow around the character so the background looks more like a screen and would make the character stand out more. I made the colours look like the character is in a space or is in the galaxy.

Idea 3:

Figure 4. Idea 3 Subtle Colours With Text

I added blue lighting where the screen light would hit. I followed the advice my tutor gave me by making the background darker. After that, I added the title in the middle "<<<Please Wait...>>>" to make it look like a poster. I also made it darker behind the title so it is easier to see.

Idea 4:

Figure 5. Idea 4 Message Bubble

I experimented with several typefaces and fonts for the title and determined that incorporating an additional element into the illustration would enhance its overall design. Specifically, I introduced a message bubble, a recurring feature in the novel depicted in the illustration. The typeface selected for this design was "IMPACT," primarily because the comic consistently employs a bold and thick typeface whenever a message is conveyed.

Feedback

Week 3

My tutor gave me advice to make the background of the illustration darker and to add a title or texts.

Week 4

This week my tutor said I should try experimenting on my typography on the title. Other than that, he said I could proceed with the final product.
