Advanced Typography - Task 3 Type Exploration & Application
|| 18/6/2025 - 27/7/2025 (Week 9 - Week 14 )
After reading page 19 and 20, it was pretty interesting how designers composite their font to make it comprehensible but also aesthetically pleasing to look at.

3. Process Work
Research:
For this task, I had 3 ideas that I wanted to propose to my tutor and see if he would approve them. He told me that he did not have any problems with idea 1 and 3 but the 2nd one did was not approved. From his approval I had to choose either the 1st idea or the 3rd.
He mentioned that the 1st idea if good but it needed some more exploration and thinking for reasons. As for the 3rd idea, he said that making wings could be limiting and really tough and I would also need to explore even more for it.
In the end, I chose the 3rd idea because I favored it more compared to the 1st idea and I want to challenge myself in creating a font out of wings.
Ideation:
Sketches
Figure 1.1 Sketches (Week 10, 23/6/2025)
These are the sketches I've made before I progress to digitalizing my font. I took my time and kept looking at references so that the wings are accurate to Abrahamic Angel wings.
Figure 1.2 Using Adobe Illustrator (Week 10, 23/6/2025)
I placed in my sketches into Adobe Illustrator and began my digitalizing with A and B.
Figure 1.3 Digitalizing The Uppercase(Week 10, 23/6/2025)
After that, I continuously repeat my process of creating my wings font and made some minor adjustments and not basing my designs entirely from my sketches.
Figure 1.4 Digitalizing The Lowercase, Symbol, And Numbers (Week 10, 23/6/2025)
After receiving feedback on my uppercase, my tutor approved of my font so I continued with making my lowercases, symbol, and numbers.
Here are the completed digitalization of the font.
Figure 1.6 Fontforge (Week 12, 9/7/2025)
When I completed my digitalization, it was time to move to importing my design into FontForge. I adjusted the sizes and kerned every single letter which was quite time consuming but was worth it.
Design Process
Figure 1.7 Process Design (Week 13, 16/7/2025)
When I completed my font, my tutor gave me the green light to proceed with making my font presentations and applications.
Figure 1.8 Improvised Designs (Week 13, 16/7/2025)
During the 2nd final week, I showed my tutor my font presentation and application designs. He gave me a lot of comments on fixing my designs so it could focus more towards my font design since my font is illustration heavy. I took his advice and duplicated the old designs and fixed them.
The bottom two rows are the improvised versions taken from the feedback. I tried making my fonts more bigger and obvious so its much more focused instead of having graphics.
Design Elaboration
Figure 1.9 Design Elaboration Competition (Week 13, 16/7/2025)
This is my design elaboration for the competition I had to participate.
Figure 2.0 Abrahamic Wings Design For Competition (Week 13, 16/7/2025)
I created these wallpaper and icon designs based on the theme that was given to us to follow. I made these on Photoshop by downloading a phone mockup and just used the letters as icons and the O as a simple wallpaper design.

4. Feedback
Week 9
Specific Feedback
My tutor said that I could proceed with either the skeletal structure
idea or wings from Abrahamic mythology. He explained that the wings
would be limited but I could explore and create good ideas and the
skeletal structure would be better if the main reason of use would be
for museums and etc.
General Feedback
This week, my tutor said we needed to complete our uppercase by the next
week after approving our proposals.
Week 10
Specific Feedback
This week, my tutor checked on my upper cases design and approved of it so I could continue on my lower cases, symbols, and numbers.General Feedback
He gave us feedbacks and checked our progress.
Week 11
Specific Feedback
He approved of my lower and upper cases so I could proceed to import my design into fontforge.General Feedback
Feedbacks were given to all the students.
Week 12
Specific Feedback
My tutor said I can proceed with my presentations and applications since I had no problems with fontforge.General Feedback
Briefing for font presentation and application.
Week 13
Specific Feedback
My tutor advised me that I should try to focus on my font design instead of using graphics. He gave a few examples for me to reference and understand. I asked him about my color palette and he said it works but i need to test around with my presentation and application designs.General Feedback
This week, our tutor told us that our task 3 submission is due on week 14 instead of week 13 before class. After that, he checked our progress work on our presentation and application.
5. Reflections
Experience
I was quite excited to start this assignment when I heard we would be creating something personal that interests us. I was really happy when my tutor approved most of my ideas for my font designs. However, one was left out which I was quite bummed about but I knew I wouldn't have chosen that idea even if it was approved. After completing my font, I felt so accomplished and I enjoyed the process a lot. Although it was not easy, I would want to make more fonts in the future after improving myself in design making.
Observation
During the assignment, I've noticed that I often ask for my friends opinions about my designs and get their criticisms so I could understand their views and try to cater to other peoples vision while making my font. I repeatedly kept getting their opinions to improve my font design and it really helped.
Findings
I would say I find that kerning my font was probably the most time consuming and treacherous because of how many letters, symbols, and numbers I had to evenly space out. It really made me appreciate those font designers who create a fully working font design.
