3. Process Work

Research:

To begin, I explored Pinterest for inspiration and to get a sense of the design direction I wanted for my typeface. Here are a few references that I found particularly interesting.

Ideation:

Our first task was to design our own display fonts, beginning with a meticulous dissection and analysis of the letters h, o, g, and b.

Figure 1.1 Practice Dissection, Week 8 (10/11/2024)

I tried practicing how to dissect with the letter m first to get the hang of how to dissect.

I then analyzed the letters h, o, g, and b, as it was a requirement outlined in the instructions provided on Teams.

Drawing from my understanding practice of dissecting, I started sketching my envisioned letterforms on graph paper, carefully refining their design and structure. I experimented with various markers to explore how different strokes would appear.

My tutor pointed out that the design was too inconsistent, noting that the letter styles were overly elaborate.

This sketch was rejected since it wasn't what my tutor wanted.

Figure 1.5 Dark Blue Angled Calligraphy Marker Sketch, Week 9 (19/11/2024)

My tutor approved and appreciated this sketch; however, she noted that the ink was too thick and had bled around the edges of the letters, making them unclear. She recommended trying a new pen marker while maintaining the same style I used for this design.

This was the final sketch design approved by Ms. Vitiyaa, allowing me to move on to the next step: digitalization.

Digitalization Process:

I started by using the pen tool to trace the shape of the letter "O," following the outline of my sketch.

These is the designs I created and submitted for my tutor's approval before moving forward to FontLab to download our design. Upon receiving feedback, Ms. Vitiyaa advised me to revise the letters O, S, C, and G, as they didn’t appear to belong to the same family as the other letters. I made slight adjustments by thinning certain parts to ensure consistency with the line weights of the other letters.

After making slight adjustments to the letters O, S, C, and G, Ms. Vitiyaa approved the design and gave me the go-ahead to proceed to FontLab. I adjusted and fixed the spacing of the letters so they don't feel too cramped together.

Once I downloaded my typeface design, I began creating a poster featuring it. The quote I used was, 'DESIGNING TOO, CHILLING TILL THE END! #STILL GONE..' and it was approved without any revisions, allowing me to proceed with my final submission.

4. Feedback

Week 9

Specific Feedback

Ms. Vitiyaa chose one of my designs but told me to use a better pen to improve the design since the one she chose was too thick and the ink spreadded around the edges of the letters. After I had completed redesigning, Ms. Vitiyaa approved my work and I could proceed to digitalizing my work.

General Feedback

Ms. Vitiyaa instructed us to complete our designs for her review and approval before moving forward with digitizing our work.

Week 10

Specific Feedback

Ms. Vitiyaa carefully reviewed my e-portfolio, pointing out areas I had missed or mistakes I needed to correct. She also suggested brightening the text colors, noting that dull shades might make the content harder to read.

General Feedback

This week, we focused on finalizing our digital designs and refining our e-portfolios, while she reviewed everyone’s progress and provided feedback.

Week 11

Specific Feedback

Ms. Vitiyaa pointed out that some letters in my typeface didn't appear cohesive as part of the same family. After making the necessary adjustments, she approved the design, allowing me to move forward with creating my poster.

General Feedback

This week, our tutor asked us to review and work towards completing our typeface design.

Week 12

Specific Feedback

Ms. Vitiyaa reviewed my poster and approved it, allowing me to proceed with submission without requiring significant changes.

General Feedback

Earlier this week, Ms. Vitiyaa reviewed our progress on the completed typeface design and continue to the next phase: creating our poster using the typeface we had made.

Week 13

Specific Feedback

Ms. Vitiyaa approved my work and e-portfolio, noting that I only needed to finalize everything.

General Feedback

This week, Ms. Vitiyaa plans to review our final posters featuring our typeface designs.

Week 14

Specific Feedback

During the final week, Ms. Vitiyaa did not mention my name for any E-Portfolio revisions, so I was all set. She stated that those who weren’t called out had their E-Portfolios in order and no longer needed to worry about them.

General Feedback

For our final class, Ms. Vitiyaa could give us our final consultation and make sure we could all move on to the next semester.

5. Reflections

Experience

I was thrilled to begin working on our own typeface designs for this task. During the sketching phase, I often felt anxious about whether my tutor would approve my work. However, to my surprise, my designs were approved, and the process progressed smoothly from there.

Observation

I often helped my friends by providing feedback and offering advice to refine their work. It was a rewarding experience, as it allowed me to see their progress while also reflecting on my own. Over time, I noticed significant improvement in my designs, as I made a point to refine them after each round of feedback. Week by week, I became more confident in my abilities, constantly learning and evolving my design process.

Findings

While creating my digitized letters, I noticed some mistakes and worked on improving them after receiving feedback from my tutor and friends. I realized that seeking opinions from others and observing their work significantly enhanced my ideas and overall design.
