Experience
During the initial weeks of the module, I found myself uncertain about the course expectations, largely due to the absence of an assigned tutor. It was not until the third week that a lecturer was appointed to our group. Unfortunately, I was unable to attend one of the early consultation sessions due to a prior commitment, which caused some initial anxiety. However, I recalled that our tutor, Mr. Asrizal, had mentioned that feedback could also be obtained via Microsoft Teams. I was appreciative of this flexibility, as it allowed me to stay informed despite my scheduling conflict.
For the second task, I experienced some uncertainty regarding the formatting and structure of my document. I was concerned that it might not meet the required standards and that I might need to revise it extensively. Fortunately, upon receiving feedback from my tutor, I was reassured that the format was appropriate, and I was encouraged to proceed with the rest of the critical review. By the time we reached the third task, the focus shifted toward more in-depth research on our selected topics. I conducted extensive research, exploring various films, television shows, and scholarly articles to inform the development of my questionnaire. My tutor approved this stage of the project, which provided a sense of relief and satisfaction, reinforcing my confidence in the direction of my work.
Observation
Throughout this module, it became evident that the research process requires considerable depth and critical engagement. Conducting effective research extends beyond simply sourcing information from random articles; it necessitates the careful selection of credible, peer-reviewed sources and academically reputable websites. A thorough understanding of what constitutes a reliable and valid source is essential in producing meaningful and academically sound work.
Research methodology, in particular, demands significant time, effort, and attention to detail. Developing a robust research project that can contribute value to the academic community or serve as a useful reference for others involves a disciplined and methodical approach. Moreover, aligning the research with one’s area of specialisation and personal interests plays a crucial role in sustaining motivation and ensuring the quality of the output. Without genuine interest or passion, the research process can become mechanical and uninspired. Conversely, when a researcher is genuinely engaged with their topic, the resulting work is often more impactful and resonant, effectively communicating the intended message to its audience.
Findings
This module has significantly enhanced my understanding of the importance and purpose of research methodology. Through the guidance of my tutor, I came to recognise that research must be grounded in a clear rationale; it is not sufficient to simply choose a topic at random. Instead, it is essential to justify why a particular topic is being explored and to establish its relevance within a broader academic or practical context.
Research methodology, as I have learned, goes beyond surface-level investigation. It involves critically assessing whether a topic presents a meaningful problem to solve and determining whether it has already been extensively examined by others. This critical approach ensures that the research contributes original insights or perspectives rather than reiterating existing findings.
Moreover, this module has enabled me to view everyday subjects and experiences through a more analytical lens. I have gained the ability to interpret ordinary phenomena with greater depth and nuance, revealing layers of meaning that I might previously have overlooked.
