Task 1

Figure 1. ⋘ 𝑃𝑙𝑒𝑎𝑠𝑒 𝑤𝑎𝑖𝑡... ⋙ by BLACKBOX/1L9l2Aa8UCL0IGJ (2024) - Digital Illustration

Title: ⋘ 𝑃𝑙𝑒𝑎𝑠𝑒 𝑤𝑎𝑖𝑡... ⋙

Artist Name: BLACKBOX / 1L9l2Aa8UCL0IGJ

Year: 2024

Size: 2800px x 4000px

Medium: Digital Illustration

Observation

This artwork was created by Blackbox, the illustrator responsible for the novel cover of Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint. The novel served as a significant source of entertainment and solace during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Amid prolonged periods of isolation, it provided a meaningful escape, allowing me to momentarily detach from the uncertainties of the world.

The illustration, completed in August 2024, was specifically drawn to commemorate the character’s birthday. Despite its monochromatic composition, the artwork is visually compelling. Blackbox’s rendering technique, while seemingly simple, demonstrates a meticulous attention to detail, strategically emphasizing key elements to enhance the depth and expressiveness of the piece. The character’s gesture of holding the screen while reading the artist’s fans’ comments is a remarkable way to integrate audience engagement directly into the artwork. This creative approach not only acknowledges the fans but also enhances the piece’s emotional depth and interactivity. The subtle glitches in the background, combined with the stream of comments, create the illusion that the character is breaking the fourth wall, blurring the boundary between fiction and reality.

Task 2

Figure 2. Idea 4

I experimented with several typefaces and fonts for the title and determined that incorporating an additional element into the illustration would enhance its overall design. Specifically, I introduced a message bubble, a recurring feature in the novel depicted in the illustration. The typeface selected for this design was "IMPACT," primarily because the comic consistently employs a bold and thick typeface whenever a message is conveyed.

Rationale

In this task, I initially selected an illustration from the previous assignment, yet at first, I struggled to identify what aspects required improvement. To overcome this challenge, I decided to approach the task with a trial-and-error mindset, experimenting without a clear plan in mind. This method proved effective, enabling me to generate new ideas. Given that the illustration was predominantly monochromatic, I chose to introduce color overlays to enhance its visual appeal. Following this, I received constructive feedback from my tutor, who suggested incorporating a title and experimenting with typography. I adhered to his advice, implementing the changes as instructed. Additionally, I introduced a new design element, a message bubble positioned at the center of the artwork by which I felt complemented the overall composition. However, this change led to a new issue: the focus of the illustration became disjointed.

Seeking further guidance, I consulted my tutor, who recommended modifying the title to reflect the name of the novel from which the illustration originated. This adjustment, he explained, would provide viewers with context regarding the illustration's source. After numerous revisions and refinements, the final version of the illustration was approved. Through this process, I gained valuable insights into the importance of observing and understanding the principles behind illustrations, as well as how to apply this knowledge to effectively enhance and refine an artwork.

Reflection

What have I learnt in this module?

I have learnt to observe the principles of other artist's works and understand the elements of principle during research. Although I have learnt part of this during my Foundation In Design, this module really made me understand the principles clearer.

What did i enjoy the most?

I found most enjoyment from Task 2 and Task 3 since we were to improve artists works and I find that interesting.

What did I not enjoy the most?

When I had to find certain images and explain the meaning of it in Task 1 since it was repetitive.

What have I learnt about myself through this module?

I find myself sometimes rushing an assignment after procrastinating and I've learnt that I should plan my time schedule so that I won't be stressed during submission.

What has changed and what has not in my learning journey?

Parts that I have not changed are time management which I should work on better in the near future. While the ones that have changed were understanding what my tutor told me to change in my work since it is necessary to follow what the client or customer want.

What are my aspirations?

I hope to improve my art in many ways and understand how to properly use my knowledge that I have learned through my semesters to create fun narratives.
